한국의 4대문

Seoul has 4 main gates in its fortress walls, which served to protect the capital city since the Joseon Dynasty. They are Heunginjimun(East Gate), Donuimun(West Gate), Sungnyemun(South Gate) and Sukjeongmun(Notrh Gate).

서울에는 조선시대부터 수도를 지켜주던 4대문이 있습니다. 

바로, 동쪽의 흥인지문, 서쪽의 돈의문, 남쪽의 숭례문, 북쪽의 숙정문입니다.

흥인지문 (동대문)

Designated as the Treasure No.1 of Korea, Heunginjimun is characterized by a semi-circle shaped outer wall called Ongseong*, which was constructed to provide stronger protection.

*Ongseong: an additional wall built outside the gate of the fortress for greater protection

한국의 보물 제1호이며, 성문을 튼튼하게 보호하기 위해 반원 모양의 옹성을 쌓은 것이 특징입니다.

옹성: 성문을 지키기 위해 큰 성문 밖에 쌓은 작은 성

숭례문 (남대문)

Sungnyemun, Korea's National Treasure No.1 is the largest fortress gate remaining in Korea, and the Oldest extant wooden structure in Seoul.

한국의 국보 제1호로, 현존하는 성문 건축물로 한국에서 가장 규모가 크고, 서울에 남아있는 목조 건물 중 가장 오래되었습니다.

숙정문 (북대문)

Initially named Sukcheongmun, the gate is situated in a heavily mountainous area unlike the other fortress gates of Seoul. Sukjeongmun was kept closed most of the time since the gate was intended to be used only for emergencies and had more of a ceremonious function.

원래 명칭은 숙청문이었으며, 다른 문과 달리 험준한 산악지대에 위치해있습니다. 숙정문은 본래 사람들의 출입을 위해 지었다기보다는, 4대문의 격식을 갖추고 비상시 사용할 목적으로 지어 평소에는 닫아두었다고 합니다.

돈의문 (서대문)

Among the four main gates of Seoul, Donuimun Gate now exists in historical records only. Since the gate was demolished during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea, its exact is not officially identified. Yet, the gate is presumed to have stood on an uphill path heading to Dongnimmun Gate from Gyeonghuigung Palace.

서울 4대문 가운데 역사 자료로만 전해지는 문입니다. 1915년 일제 강점기 때 철거되어 정확한 위치는 알 수 없으나, 원래 자리가 경희궁터에서 독립문 쪽으로 넘어가는 고갯길쯤이었을 것으로 추측됩니다.

돈의문 박물관 마을

Donuimun Gate was lost to the pages of history, but it is still possible to catch a glimpse of the history and traditional culture of the area where the gate stood in Donuimun Museum Village.

돈의문을 볼 수 없어 아쉽다면 돈의문이 있던 자리에 조성된 돈의문 박물관 마을에서 돈의문 지역의 역사와 전통문화를 들여다볼 수 있습니다.
